Sarva Pitru amavasya shradh – Pitru Paksha is the time when our ancestors come to the earth with the desire for the tarpan performed by the hands of their descendants. Pitru Paksha is that auspicious occasion of 15 days every year, when we can satisfy our ancestors and get the blessings of happiness in life from them. Pitra Paksha starts from the full moon day of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month and ends on Amavasya date of Ashwin month, which is known as Sarva Pitru moksha amavasya. This year it is on 25th September 2022, Sunday.
Why Sarva Pitru Amavasya Shradh
It is believed that if you want to make all-round progress in life, then the blessings of the ancestors are also needed. The karmas which are adversely affecting various areas of life and not giving us progress in life in this birth, can be pacified by performing Tarpan in Pitru Paksha or on Sarva Pitru moksha amavasya.
The amavasya shradh gives belssings of the lord of death i.e., Lord Yama. Entire family comes under the blessings of our forefathers’ departed soul which protects us from all ills and obstacles. The souls after receiving the Tarpan from their descendants, move forward for total liberation or mukti. Problems like chronic illness, sickness/deaths in family, property feuds, children not doing good etc., all can be mitigated to a great extent by performing Sarva Pitru Moksha Amavasya Shradh.
Significance of Sarva Pitru Amavasya Shradh
In all the 15 days shradh of Pitru Paksha, Sarva Pitru moksha amavasya Shradh has special significance. If due to any reason all the days of Shradh are missed, that means no Shradh could be done during the days of Pitru Paksha, then on this day a combined Shradh can be performed for all the ancestors, that is why it is called सर्व पितृ मोक्ष अमावस्या श्राद्ध
In the days other than Sarva Pitru moksha amavasya Shradh, the tithi on which the ancestors died and it is known, then the Shradh of those ancestors takes place on that tithi. But on Amavasya Shradh, Shradh of all known and unknown ancestors can be done. Performing tarpan with full devotion on this day satisfy not only the souls of your ancestors, but souls of all the past life relationships you have ever had; relatives, friends, pets, cattle etc., everyone’s soul will be satisfied.

If you have the time and resources, then the tarpan can be done by a karma- kandi purohit/priest. Shradh/Tarpan is usually performed on the banks of a holy river and in a holy area. But in today’s run-of-the-mill life and the kind of environment that is going on, it may not be possible for everyone to do so. But this does not mean that you cannot offer tarpan to your ancestors on Sarva Pitru amavasya.

After Amavasya Shradh of Pitru Paksha 2022, it is considered very auspicious to feed cows, crows and feed small creatures like ants. Poor feeding in the name of your ancestors on this day is very auspicious. This type of action will help you in getting blessings from your ancestors.
